Mindful Filling of Our Souls

Originally published about four years ago when our boys were 5 and 3.

One of the great joys of my life these days is getting to hear original thoughts that come rolling out of our boys.

A personal favorite came about when our older son, Joshua, asked about the origin of his belly button. After going through my anatomy atlas and discussing the roles of the umbilical cord and placenta, Margaret asked, "So why do you have a belly button?" To which Joshua's immediate reply was: "Because you cut the hose off!" Read more

Music for Health: I Choose You, by Sara Bareilles

Talk about a voice that can take you places. Please do your soul a favour and enjoy this one while seated or lying down, eyes closed, and with the best quality earphones you have access to. Natural Sleep Aid For Babies

Back when our firstborn, Joshua, was about six months old and had trouble getting to sleep without one of us holding him, we resorted to the universal remedy of strapping him into his car seat and going for a long drive. Read more

Our Knobby Therapeutic Foam Roller

If you've been following our site for a while now, you likely know how much I value using a foam roller to keep muscles and ligaments healthy and well perfused with blood. In my experience, having a foam roller is almost as good as having your own personal massage therapist. You can use a roller to apply therapeutic massage to just about any muscle group. And if you combine foam rolling with stretching all of your major muscle groups, you can expect to be highly flexible and decrease risk of injuries that come about from "brittle" muscles and ligaments that are congested with waste materials and lacking optimal blood flow. Music for Health: The Promise, by Tracy Chapman

I have long found that the best love songs are those with lyrics that I can feel for anyone I want to know forever and be reunited with in eternity after passing on from this world. "The Promise" by Tracy Chapman definitely fits this description for me. Read more

Earthlings: A Devastating Documentary on Humanity's Lack of Respect for Other Living Creatures

This post was originally published in March, 2007.

It is with sadness that I write this blog entry. I just finished watching a documentary called Earthlings that contains the most abominable acts of cruelty towards animals that I have ever seen. Read more

Our Parents

If you arrived at this page looking for a letter that was written to my friend David, I'm very sorry to let you know that regrettably, it's no longer available.

The letter was intended to lend support to our friends in an anonymous way, and my hope was that those who could relate to the experience of having a difficult relationship with their parents during their upbringing would be comforted in knowing that many others share this experience and still feel a strong sense of compassion for their parents. Product Review: Philips Sonicare For Healthy Teeth And Gums

We are blessed with an incredibly kind and highly skilled dentist who recently recommended that we look at using an electric toothbrush. Not the kind where the bristles leisurely swirl around, fuelled by a battery that sits in the handle of the brush. Our dentist strongly encouraged us to use a product made by Philips called the Sonicare FlexCare Plus Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush. Read more

Potential Long Term Dangers of LASIK Surgery

Research out of Otago and Oxford Universities in New Zealand indicates that having LASIK surgery can lead to permanent problems with vision over the long term.

More specifically, it appears that having laser surgery for near-sightedness (myopia) may lead to excessive glare, haze, and blurred vision as people enter their 7th and 8th decades of life. Read more
