As of this past week's tally, more than 40 million Americans have filed for unemployment over the past 2-3 months.
There are about 203 million people living in the United States who are between the ages of 18 and 65.
This translates to an unemployment rate of roughly 20 percent of the working population.
There is no doubt in my mind that we are in the beginning stages of the greatest economic crisis since The Great Depression of 1929 to 1933.
Financial markets have been temporarily re-inflated by central bank money printing over the past two months, but there is an enormous gulf between Wall Street and Main Street.
Over the next year or two, the great danger and probable outcome is a spike in insolvencies - many households and businesses will go bankrupt. It's been estimated that 30 to 40 percent of small businesses won't be able to re-open in the weeks ahead even when allowed to do so.
Banks have access to plenty of funds to lend out to stimulate the economy, but they are sitting tight on most of these reserves, as they are already facing the prospect of significant losses from unpaid loans, and they don't want more medium to high risk loans on their books.
There has never been a better time to save, reduce expenses, and for those who are able to, support people and small businesses that are working hard to serve their communities.
Since shelter-in-place policies began, we've been looking to support such people and businesses. To continue with these efforts, this week, we're looking for nominations for people living in Sacramento and the Bay Area who our readers feel would be highly appreciative of a Bounty Box of good eats from Danielle and her team at
